This presentation will help dispel stereotypes of Native Americans.  Learn where Native Americans live, how they look, and where they work.  PowerPoint presentation showing Native Americans and their roles in today's society.

From Wool to Clothing

In this time of great technological advances, children do not always understand how hard it was for a family to provide for their day to day needs like having material for clothing before the 1900's. This presentation/demo will cover the different types of sheep and their wool fibers (samples will be provided), how it was cleaned and prepared for spinning, spinning techniques (demo on a drop spindle and a spinning wheel), how fiber was naturally dyed and how it would have been woven into fabric.  Presentation can be tailored to match subject interest, time period and age group.

Tales of international travel are exciting, especially for children who may not have had the opportunity to travel yet.  This traveler's exploits to Peru, Egypt, Israel, Greece, Japan, Hong Kong, Turkey, Scotland and China will be related through a collection of hats brought back from her journeys.

This session will show the evolution of money, from barter to electronic transfer.  What do shells, fur, metal and chocolate (cocoa) beans have in common?  They have all been used in the past as money!  Coins from different countries and time periods will be shown.

Love Your Dog

The speaker will demonstrate that a good, strong relationship can build between owners and their dogs by spending time with the dog(s) through gromming and training.  Presenter will bring her dog and will have the audience simulate on stuffed animals of their choice.

Marie Rouensa:  Portrait of a Kaskaskia Indian

Presentation is about the life of Marie Rouensa.  Learn how the daughter of Kaskaskia Chief Rouensa influenced the lives of the Kaskaskia Indians around the turn of the 18th Century and gained respect in a white society becoming one of the most notable women in southern Illinois.  (Speaker is a direct descendent of Marie Rouensa.)

Play Me a Story

We'll read the story, "Where the Wild Things Are," discuss it, cast it as a play, make costumes out of newspaper and perform it - all in 45 minutes!  After the "curtain" closes, we'll strike the set by putting our newspaper costumes into the recycle box.  This workshop focuses on the fun of reading, the joy of imagination and creativity and the satisfaction that comes with a good group effort.  (Note:  Additional adult helpers may be needed for large groups or young children.)

radKIDS - Personal Empowerment Safety Education

This program is a 10-hour family-centered safety education program that emphasizes essential decision-making skills as well as physical resistance options to escape violence.  Children from 5-12 years of age may participate in the program with their adult partners to create a true safety partnership.
